i decided i should make a cover for the machine because what better way to avoid vogue #8425 (again). i did not, however, want a quilted toaster cover which is apparently the most popular style for sewing machine covers in the free patterns universe.
i had some leftover privacy shade fabric from my window blind project. it has some body to it so i thought it would work well for my cover.
i was planning to follow this pattern, but i had no idea what they were talking about in step 1:
Using the lines indicating the finished size of the end pattern piece, find the total of the height, across the top of the pattern piece and the second height. A+B+C = Sum
Fold the top of the pattern in half and continue the fold down the pattern piece. Use this fold as a straight grain line to layout and cut two of this piece.
i figured it would only get worse at step 2 (assuming i even made it to step 2) so i just did my own thing:
- measured the height, length & depth of the sewing machine & added an inch to the measurements for seam allowances.
- cut 3 pattern pieces- 1 for the 2 sides, 1 for the top & 1 for the 2 end pieces.
- pinned/cut
- sewed the end pieces to the side pieces.
- sewed the top piece in <-- this took the most time because you're sewing a square piece into a square. you could clip the corners to make it easier, but i just pinned the crap out the corners & sewed very slowly & carefully around them.
- trim seams
- do a finishing hem although i didn't need to because the privacy shade fabric cuts completely clean.
i wasn't expecting it to be this low profile, but i must say i really like it.
it practically disappears against the wall.
the antithesis of the quilted toaster cover.
